Play.com is a British-run website that was founded in 1998 to sell CDs online.

Play.com, or just Play, has since expanded to selling a new form of media every year. Since 1998, Play has added books, DVDs, games, ringtones and electronic goods to its retail list. Play also has started to ship goods to continental Europe. Recently it has also started to sell books.

Like many online retailers, Play.com operates from Jersey in the Channel Islands. One advantage of this is that customers in the European Union can purchase products such as DVDs and CDs without having to pay VAT.

Play.com has taken a number of initiatives to enable it to compete successfully with Amazon.co.uk, especially in the British and Irish markets. For example, Play.com offers customers in these markets free delivery on all products (whereas Amazon.co.uk offers free delivery only on orders in excess of £15, and even then only within the United Kingdom). Furthermore, Play.com allows customers to opt to be invoiced in either Euro or British pounds, whereas Amazon.co.uk invoices only in British pounds.

In October 2004 Play.com Inc launched PlayUSA.com, a site catering to the North American market. Although differently named, each site is non-exclusive to their territory and the primary distinction is the DVD region stocked. As of yet, PlayUSA.com currently retails DVDs only.
